Common challenges faced by leaders and clients when managing change

  • Letting Go of Control

Trusting your team and delegating tasks can be challenging but necessary. Leaders need to gradually release control, provide support, and offer coaching to empower their team. This will help them tap into their full potential and drive sustainable growth for your business.

  • Getting stuck in the day-to-day operation:

Moving from day-to-day operations to strategic planning requires a mindset shift. Leaders must take a step back, look at the bigger picture, and focus on guiding the company so it can hit its long-term goals.

  • Being afraid

Change brings fears about the future. You can address these fears through open communication, coaching, and thinking about – and sharing – just how resilient your company really is.

  • Not having a long-term vision

Some leaders have a difficult time being clear on where they see the company in 5 or 10 years. You need to articulate your long-term goals and values to guide decision-making and align team efforts.

Peter Senge said "Culture eats strategy for breakfast" and what that means is that if the culture has not caught up to the change, you're still going to struggle - even if the strategy is really clear.

KPIs to track successful change management implementation

Here are some KPIs for tracking successful change management.

  • Break down specific processes in your operations into measurable goals to assess their effectiveness.

  • Watch out for shifts in company culture which might come out as changes in employee engagement, the feedback you receive, and the adoption of new practices by your team members.

  • Observe your sales performance; if there are any declines, it might be due to internal confusion or issues.

  • Align all changes and activities to your company’s vision.

  • Empower your staff individuals by clarifying their roles and responsibilities to resolve conflicts and provide direction.

“Create a framework around negative feedback, saying “I’m happy to hear any concerns and your suggestions for what we can do about that” because that’s empowering for the people, it’s not all up to management to make it happen, but a group effort.  – Ursula Jorch

Handling challenges in sales organizations during change

During a period of change in a sales organization, one of the biggest challenges is when roles are no longer clear and the sales process is no longer effective. This is because there is now confusion as to who is responsible for what within the sales process, leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities. Your sales team might now have a different focus which will affect the overall execution of your sales strategy.

Take some time to review your sales processes and clearly define the different roles of your sales team to ensure smooth operations moving forward. This will help you set up a structured disciplinary process as well.

It's important that people talk about their concerns appropriately and so much of it is, what kind of family scenario did you grow up in? How did you learn to cope with change? How did you express your opinions? And there may need to be some training around this.

Dealing with negative and positive informal communication

When handling both positive and negative informal communication during times of change, set realistic expectations. Accept that some will express dissatisfaction and though you might not want to hear it, making your team suppress their emotions isn’t productive.

Encouraging open dialogue is good, but asking for constructive criticism, including potential solutions is better. This might involve training or clear communication guidelines because not everyone has the professional and even personal background to comment or express their opinions in that way.

When you foster a supportive culture where everyone feels heard can make managing change smoother and more positive in the long run.

Actionable tips for easing the pain of change for employees

Get support: Going through change is already tough, but going through it alone is even more challenging. Think about working with a coach or find someone trusted, or an expert in the field to act as a sounding board for you to help you gain perspective and find solutions.

Push for open communication: Hold one-on-one conversations with your team members to understand their experiences and concerns. Show empathy and let them know that their feedback is valued, which will make them feel connected to you and appreciate the transparency throughout the change process.

Summary

  • Common challenges when managing change include difficulty letting go of control, losing sight of the big picture, and lacking a clear company vision.

  • Key KPIs for successful change include sales performance, role clarity, employee engagement, adopting new practices, and evaluating process effectiveness.

  • Address unclear roles and sales processes to maintain sales performance during change.

  • Manage negative informal communication by setting expectations and fostering open dialogue.

  • To make change easier for employees, seek personal support as a leader first and then hold empathetic one-on-one conversations with your team.
